They were founded in 1989 and helped define the North Carolina scene of the early 90s, one that was very much centered around the band's record label Merge, although they released a few records on other labels as well. On The Mouth, their third album and first with longtime drummer Jon Wurster, was released on seminal indie label Matador. They took a bit of a break at the beginning of the 2000s
