Ole, why did you choose the DSI?
The course combines theory and practice perfectly. The direct link to the real world of work enables me to apply what I have learned in the practical phases and gain experience that I would not be able to gain in a purely academic course. The fact that I earn money during my studies also takes the pressure off me financially and allows me to concentrate on my training.
The DSI allows me to gain professional experience early on, which not only strengthens my CV, but also makes it easier for me to enter the world of work. The possibility of being taken on directly by my training company after my bachelor’s degree is particularly appealing, which saves me the often tedious application process. In addition, the training I am receiving alongside my computer science degree is opening more doors for me in the industry.
What is the atmosphere like at Bremen University of Applied Sciences?
I can describe the atmosphere at the university as practical and inspiring. Many lecturers have worked in industry for several years and incorporate their experiences and stories into their lectures. In addition, the atmosphere is professional and academic, which encourages us students to think independently and question things critically. The atmosphere among us students is also very good.
Which company was your practice partner?
I am in #teamyellow, i.e. at Commerzbank AG.

What specifically did you do and learn there?
I am currently in my practical semester and work in a department that deals with the design, programming and maintenance of software on mainframes. Many applications are written in the COBOL programming language, so I am currently taking part in a COBOL workshop to learn the specific features and techniques of this language. In previous practical phases, I also had the opportunity to gain experience in development with Java (EE) and Spring (Boot).
What should someone who is thinking about doing the DSI know?
You should be aware that the start of your studies is very challenging, especially in the field of electrical engineering. There are also numerous labs during the course, which take up a lot of time and work. It is highly recommended that you look for study groups early on, as these are a great help in understanding the material and completing the tasks. It is also worth knowing that some companies allow students to spend a semester abroad, even if this is not actually planned. Although the DSI is really demanding at times, it is still great fun and is the ideal choice for those who want a practice-oriented course.
